Looking for a career change or to enhance your existing skill set? If so, what are technology areas likely to be in most demand in 2017?

It’s that time of year when IT professionals traditionally evaluate where they are on their career ladder and perhaps consider new opportunities. So, we’ve looked at a range of ‘top skill’ lists produced by leading industry observers and recruitment companies in order to get an indication of what is likely to be in most demand over the coming 12 months.

Here, in no particular order, are the top five picks:

  • Cybersecurity – the demand for cyber security skills appears to be greater than ever with the numerous high profile hacks of the past year only serving to fuel such growth. There seem to be particular shortages in security analysis and investigation skills, along with application security and cloud security
  • Cloud – the growth in companies implementing cloud technology has resulted in an associated demand for cloud skills. The indications are that skills associated with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure cloud technologies are particularly in demand. Other popular skills include SQL for database management and programming languages like Ruby, JavaScript, and Python for building cloud-based applications
  • Application development – developers and programmers continue to be highly in demand, with companies still developing software and applications. Professionals are required to customise off-the-shelf applications, work on APIs and integration points, and develop proprietary software. In addition systems need to be maintained and updated, which further sustains the need for such skills
  • Big Data – the demand here will be driven by, amongst other things, the growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) as companies look to have the capability to effectively analyse the massive quantities of data that will be generated and derive insights, patterns, and actionable items. Among the sought-after skills here are experience in Spark, Hadoop and Oracle
  • Mobile development – the use of smartphones and tablets continues to grow so building mobile apps for iOS and Android will be in high demand in 2017. A key skill will include cross-platform development ability so apps can be launched for different types of devices. In addition user interface design will be vitally important in creating a pleasant and efficient user experience, so front-end web development and graphic design capabilities will be much sought after

There were also notable mentions for qualified networking professionals with an understanding of the wired and wireless hardware involved and, increasingly, the virtualised software in a range of networking services; and project management professionals with a track record of successfully managing projects and collaborating successfully with business partners.
